About Netsoc
History
The idea of Netsoc was conjured up in 1994 with it being founded in 1995. The primary mandate for Netsoc was to address the issue of a lack of internet access for undergraduate students.
The "original" server was a P90 with 32Mb of RAM (quickly upgraded
to 64) white-box no-name PC and SCSI disks. It served 500 people, and
often upwards of 50 interactive logins, quite well! The second server was a SS2 donated from Sun Microsystems.
Netsoc was one of the largest and most active societies in UCD up ontill the early 2000's. It had about 500 members in its first year and a peak of about 1,500 to 2,000 in 1997-1998.Netsoc saw a decline in activity naturally as UCD began to offer undergraduate students internet access. We then began a switch to BSD servers which did not go smoothly and netsoc saw a rapid decline in the services it offered (even experiencing downtime) which naturall lead to less activity.UCD Securities requested us to move our servers from their data centre to the student building in 2007 which did not go to plan and the society grinded to a hault.Netsoc was in a grave situation with hardware which was not working and a dying society. We where then thrown a life line from UCD Securities in the form of 2 HP DL380 servers Aurora (G2) and Hespera (G3). We then began to see to see green shoots starting at the end of 2007/start of 2008. We've grown considerably both in services and members since then and We are continuing to build on our services.
